When you’re looking to buy a laptop, there may be a lot of terms that confuse you. But laptop video cards don’t have to be the one that stumps you. With this guide, you’ll be able to learn the differences between integrated and dedicated graphics cards and how they can help your laptop experience.

Integrated VS Dedicated graphic cards |
| |
| |
The main difference between integrated and dedicated graphics cards is that the integrated GPU is built into the motherboard, but this causes several things to happen :
| |
| |
- Does not have its own memory
- Lowered performance
- May have fewer features
- Can slow down overall computer performance
| |
But that doesn’t mean that integrated GPU are all bad :
| |
| |
- They improve overall battery life
- Run cooler
| |
If you’re looking for performance, the dedicated GPU is the better choice :
| |
| |
- Is no connected to the motherboard
- Has its own memory
- Better gaming performance
| |
However, with this additional power, you will be using up more battery.

Graphic cards specifics |
| |
| |
• Integrated |
| |
| |
Integrated cards include Intel Extreme Graphics, Intel Extreme Graphics 2, ATI 320M/340M IGP, S3 or SiS chips
| |
| |
• Low End Dedicated Cards |
| |
| |
Low end dedicated cards include the ATI Mobility Radeon, ATI Mobility Radeon 7500, ATI Mobility Radeon 9000, ATI Mobility Radeon 9200, nVidia GeForce 4 Go Series, nVidia GeForce FX Go 5200.
| |
| |
These parts have been overtaken in terms of performance by modern IGP parts. But the GMA 900/950 and the Radeon Xpress 200M can offer good, comparable performance to these kinds of older parts.
| |
| |
• Mainstream Cards |
| |
| |
Some examples of mainstream cards include: ATI Mobility Radeon 9600 (9550) (Pro) (Turbo), ATI Mobility Radeon 9700, ATI Mobility Radeon X600 and nVidia GeForce FX Go 5700.
| |
| |
These cards are great because they’re not nearly as expensive as other cards, but they offer great performance for gamers and those that are graphics professionals.
| |
| |
• High End Cards |
| |
| |
High end cards include ATI Mobility Radeon 9800, ATI Mobility Radeon X700, ATI Mobility Radeon X800 (XT), nVidia GeForce Go 6600, and nVidia GeForce Go 6800 (Ultra).
| |
| |
While these laptop video cards offers superior performance in comparison to the other kinds listed, they’re very expensive to include in a traditional laptop package.
| |
| |
| |
In the end, you should choose a dedicated graphic card based on whether you’re a serious game player or a professional graphic designer. For these kinds of customers, a low end dedicated card is not going to be enough.
| |
| |
At the very least, you could purchase a mainstream card. Just look for models that come with mainstream cards, but that still come with reasonable prices. I like to recommend the ACER laptop since I’ve owned one for a long time and it still performs well for everything that I want to do – and it was just over $1000 to purchase.
