Why you should understand laptop hard drives? |
| |
| |
The difference between a fast laptop and a slow laptop is the hard drive – not the price. Many cheap laptops can have fast laptop hard drives, allowing you to maximize your experience for a less expensive price. While you might think that memory is the only thing that you need to consider when you’re shopping around, you might want to stop and read about laptop hard drives first.

IDE and Serial ATA |
| |
| |
Both IDE and Serial ATA are connectors that hard drives use to connect within a laptop. Laptops can come with either interface, but the two are not compatible with each other.
| |
| |
Most laptops come with the IDE at this time (also known as ATA-5/ATA-6) and these provide ample speed for your computer needs.
| |
| |
There are some laptops that are beginning to offer Serial ATA and while they are much faster than the IDE drives, they are new, so they’re tricky for the user to upgrade at this time.
| |
| |
There are three different kinds of RPMs that are associated with laptop hard drives as well: 4200rpm, 5400rpm, and 7200rpm. And while each can give you more and more speed on your laptop, they are also much more expensive as you increase the RPMs.

External hard drives |
| |
| |
If you don’t want to add to the internal hard drive, you can also purchase an external laptop hard drive. These are connect through either a USB 2.0 port or through FireWire (which is much faster).
| |
| |
You could build your own hard drive as well, but if you’re not a computer expert, it’s easier to just buy one (with a fan to help protect it).

Conclusion |
| |
| |
Today’s standard in hard drives is the IDE, but the trend to Serial ATA isn’t far away. For the time being, the best advice is to buy as much speed as you can afford, though most moderate computer users will find that the middle ground works well.

| |
Hard drives with 5400RPM and 40GB are generally plenty of speed at a moderate price. Anything lower can be quite slow and frustrating for the common laptop user.
