There are times that you will need to connect a few peripherals (extra devices) to your laptop - a printer, an external drive, etc. However, it's not a good idea to continuously unplug all those cords when you have to take your laptop somewhere. This is why you need a port replicator or docking station.

A port replicator contains computer ports, such as USB and ethernet ports. You simply connect your peripherals to the port replicator, which is then connected to your laptop. The next time you want to take your laptop somewhere, you just have to disconnect it from the port replicator, rather than having to disconnect each individual peripheral.

A docking station can do the same thing, but it usually includes slots for expansion cards, CD/DVD drives, as well as other devices. In short, a docking station is designed to turn your laptop into something similar to a desktop computer, while a port replicator simply makes it more convenient to connect peripherals to your laptop.
